Welcome to Department of Chemical Engineering

This department has been established with one faculty and 40 undergraduate students in 1967. The program of the Master of Science has been offered in 1971, and that of the Doctor of Philosophy was open in 1981 to complete the full capacity of an engineering department.
For the past 40 years, more than 3,000 undergraduates, 160 masters and 50 Ph.Ds. have graduated from this department, who are leading in a wide variety of fields of Korean industries and academia. With the growth of heavy chemical industries was introduced under the catch phrase of the industrial renovation ofthe nation, most of our graduates have been devoted themselves for the industries nationwide. In the 1980s, many graduates have been actively involved in the educational revolution. Among many of them, a former president of Pukyung National University, current vice-president of Dong-A University, a former dean of DongEui University and a former vice-president of the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations are the alumni of this department including many CEOs of public and private companies, such as CJ.

In the future chemical engineers have to find their roles in the fields of new energy and materials, which can be materialized by solid education and training programs. This department is especially specialized in chemical process engineering, polymer processing and nano-bio engineering. For the thorough fulfillment of the important roles in future society, we will do our best in the academic development for engineering education through systematic, innovative strategies and specialized way.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineering is a versatile subject in which chemical engineers process materials either chemically or physically to make goods essential to our lives. Traditionally, chemical engineering has been based on the applications of chemistry, combined with the principles of physics and mathematics. Nowadays, by combining nanotechnology and biotechnology, chemical engineering more rapidly broadens the application of its unique technology to information, biology, and, environment industry.

Chemical engineers serve in manufacturing products we use every day, such as plastics, paints, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, soap and detergent, gas and oils, foodstuffs, and fertilizer; operating a chemical plant and its equipments; performing the engineering services to operate plants economically and stably; the sale of products; and general management.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Dong-A University provides students with fundamental knowledge of physical and chemical processes and the ability to apply their knowledge to solve complicated engineering problems to produce materials essential to our lives. Our program was accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK). Students graduating under our interdisciplinary educational program will demonstrate the following:

1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and chemical engineering fundamentals to identify and solve chemical engineering problems.
2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data related to chemical engineering.
3. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs related to chemical engineering.
4. An ability to function in multi-disciplinary teams.
5. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve chemical engineering problems.
6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
7. An ability to communicate effectively through oral presentations and written reports.
8. A broad knowledge necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
9. Recognition of the needs for life-long learning and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
10. Knowledge of contemporary issues in the society, economy, environment, and law.
11. An ability to understand other cultures and engage in international collaboration.
12. An ability to use up-to-date techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools required of chemical engineering professionals

Academic Programs

The most departmental concerns exist in three main areas: chemical process, polymer process, and nano-bio process. The research and teaching activities of these areas are focused on most of the traditional technology of chemical engineering as well as new materials and technology such as polymer nanocomposites, nano-bio materials, and process modeling. In chemical process area, three faculty members research on chemical separation process, chemical process control, and transfer phenomena. In the area of polymer process, three faculty members are involved in synthesizing polymer and polymer composite, polymer processing, and polymer separation. Four faculty members are engaged in researching and teaching nano-bio process area: synthesizing and controlling nanoparticle, developing bio-elements. In addition, in order to develop students’ capability to apply their fundamental knowledge to the industrial field, three design-oriented courses (creative engineering design, introduction to chemical engineering design, chemical plant design) are provided.
